Seatbelts are a dog's best friend ...

Every state in the union requires that people wear seat belts and so should dogs. I had never used a seatbelt on my dogs ... somehow it had seemed overly protective and inconvenient for both dog and owner. At least that was true until Snickers, our previous golden retriever, aged and began to fall periodically when would I stop the car.

So I started looking into various brands and the result were discouraging. The Center for Pet Safety had conducted a study and their results suggest that 10 out of the 11 pet salt harnesses "crash tested" exhibit multiple system failures at high speed. This especially true for large and extra large dogs. Unfortunately, our laws have yet to keep pace with our culture and many of the safety regulations afforded to humans have yet to be afford to our furry friends. That makes it much harder to substantiate the claims made by many pet product manufactures. But there is a ray of hope, many manufactures of pet harnesses are producing quality products. I use American Tourister harnesses for my dogs. Unfortunately this model has been discontinued. However, the Center for Pet Safety found one brand the exceed expectations ... Sleepypod safety harnesses. So until next time, buckle up and be safe!
